Abstract

Recent years have witnessed significant advancements in women's entrepreneurship in Tanzania.
Nonetheless, its overall impact on the performance of women’s owned business is comparatively
constrained, especially in relation to male-led entrepreneurial initiatives. Although many studies have
investigated the determinants of business performance, there is insufficient targeted research on
particular industries, such as the local textile sector, in emerging economies like such as Tanzania. This
study examines the impact of business environmental factors on the performance of women-owned
businesses within the batik industry in Dar es Salaam. The study, which is grounded in Resource-based
View (RBV) theory, hypothesis that business environmental factors specifically resource availability,
business support services, socio-political conditions, human capital, and a conducive entrepreneurial
sub-cultures are directly linked to the performance of firms. It is hypothesized that government policy
influences the relationship between environmental factors and the performance of women-owned SMEs
in the batik sector. The research utilizes data gathered by the author during PhD studies conducted in
Dar es Salaam in 2024. A combination of stratified and simple random sampling methods was
employed to select 290 respondents. Data were gathered using structured surveys and questionnaires.
